Today I want to talk about crate training for puppies. Crate training your puppies has lots of benefits.

-  Prevents them from chewing on your personal items when you are away.

-  Helps potty train puppies. It is their natural behavior not to soil in the place they sleep.

-  It will get them use to cages. This can very helpful when taking them to the vet or if you have to kennel them for a period of time.

Crate Training Puppies can seem difficult but I am going to give you some tips that will help you succeed at crate training.

The first tip in crate training puppies is to start off young. It is so much easier if you can start crate training at a young age. Most puppies will begin to bark and cry when placed into a crate. You do not want to make the mistake of getting up when they are whining. The dog will associate the behavior and start to expect it whenever they whine. Instead check on the puppy once they have quieted down.

The next tip is to associate good things with the crate when introducing it to your puppy. You do not want use the crate as a type of punishment. The puppy would then relate negative feelings towards the crate. Associate positive feelings by placing their favorite toys and chews in the crate.

The last tip in crate training puppies is to limit their time. Remember their bladders are very small. Try not to leave the puppies in the crate for longer than 2-3 hours. You do not want to break their natural instinct of not going to the bathroom in the same area they sleep.

I have received many questions on puppy house training so I figured I would include more tips on potty training your puppy. Here are a couple more I thought of if you are still having problems.

The first tip for puppy house training is to try using paper or puppy training pads in the area in your house where they can go to the bathroom, preferably a tile floor that is easy to cleanup. Some training pads are scented and will attract the puppies. If you see the puppy sniffing the area, quickly pick them up and take them outside to potty. After the puppy uses the pad to potty you will want to start training them to go outside. To do this, place another pad outside. After a few times of going potty outside remove the pad from inside the house.

The next tip for puppy house training is to use a crate. I will go into more detail about crate training in another blog. The basic idea is to use the puppy’s natural instinct for our benefit. They do not want to go to the bathroom in the same area that they lay down in, I don’t blame them. Take them out of the crate to go potty and place them back in the crate while you are gone or overnight. Puppies will not like the crate at first but after time they will get use to it. If you are running out of options you can try this technique to house train your puppy.

When you are working on your Labrador training make sure you are praising your dog with verbal commands. You can start your praising when your puppies are young. This should be the first thing they learn. It may sound silly to emphasize the praising, but it is very important. - Praise Your Puppy
Another tip for succeeding at puppy house training is to praise for a job well done. When the puppy goes potty outside you need to make a big deal about it. Words like “Good Dog” and “Yay” go along way. And don’t forget the negative. If the puppy has an accident in the house use negative words such as “No” and “Bad Dog”. Be careful on the use of negative words. Make sure the dog hears more positive than negative praises.

When your puppy has an accident you will want to clean it up as soon as possible. Be sure to use a odor neutralizer designed for dogs. You should be able to find this at any pet store. If you do not eliminated the odor the puppy will smell it and try to potty in the same area. Do not use household cleaning supplies, most contain ammonia and will actually attract the puppy.
